Gurnee man shot in head, expected to be OK
A Gurnee resident who was shot in the head during an early morning scuffle with a car burglar is expected to survive, police said Tuesday afternoon.
The 60-year-old victim, whose name was not released by police, was wounded sometime before 3:50 a.m. following the confrontation on the 900 block of Campbell Drive, Gurnee police said.
The man had gone outside to investigate a loud noise, Gurnee police Cmdr. Jay Patrick said. The noise turned out to be the sound of a neighbor's car window being broken, Patrick said.
After opening his front door, the resident saw a man in a black hooded sweatshirt running past his home, police said. He chased the man to the edge of a nearby pond, pushed him in and then fell into the pond himself, police said.
After rising out of the water, the resident heard a loud pop and felt something hit him in the back of the head, police said.
He stopped a private security guard who called 911 for help. Gurnee paramedics took the man to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville. The wound was identified as a gunshot at the hospital, Patrick said.
The victim's medical condition was not available Tuesday afternoon.
The suspect was described as a man between the ages of 18 and 23, police said. He was thin and about 5 feet 10 inches tall. In addition to the sweatshirt, he was wearing black pants.
