Quarry Beach must stay open

The Batavia quarry pool has been providing affordable family fun for decades. Although I live in St. Charles, my kids, sister's family, teachers with summers off from neighboring towns, their kids and I visit it many times each summer.

The reason we love it is because it provides a much different experience than a conventional pool. I live just three blocks from Pottawatomie pool. While we do spend many sunny days swimming there, the quarry provides something more. It's like camping near a beautiful lake, visiting Florida and watching our toddlers build sand sculptures with the help of older siblings, feeling the exhilaration of falling several feet into cool, seemingly endless heat relief and returning home with wonderful stories of an exciting day.

My 79-year-old father tells stories of the quarry from when he was a young man. When my children return from the quarry, they augment Grandpa's memories with stories of their own. It is a landmark of the Fox River Valley; closing it would be a tragedy for the many children and adults who have come to count on the hours of summer fun it provides.
