Young guns shooting the lights out

HAVEN, Wis - Move over Phil.

Step aside Tiger.

The year of the young guns on Tour continues.

One look at the leaderboard at the PGA Championship at Whistling Straits is evidence of that as five of the top six players in the standings are all under 30, and the sixth, China's Wen-Chong Liang, is just 32.

"I think the players are just getting so much better at a younger age," said Rory McIlroy, 21, who is tied for second with Dustin Johnson. "It does seem like a fast (rise); the younger guys are coming out and they're just a lot better and more ready to win."

"Well, the younger guys have been playing well all year," Johnson said, "so it's not a shock to anyone."

Happiest man in the land: Though some may argue that including club pros in the field of the PGA Championship may be a practice that needs to be stopped, Louisville, Kentucky, club pro Keith Ohr's reaction to his week at Whistling Straits makes quite the counter-argument.

Because here is a guy who loved every second of his experience this week.

"I don't even know how to put it in words," Ohr said of his first PGA Championship experience. "It's just been amazing to play along with these guys, playing a golf course like this, and having my family here. It's just been a once-in-a-lifetime experience ... it's just been that good."

And this coming from a guy who shot 78-81 and missed the cut by a wide margin.

"My caddie and I talked about it the last couple days," Ohr said. "We're coming back. It's too much fun. They treat you way too nice. It's too good of an experience not to come back, so we're going to make it back."

No go for the weekend: Among the big names to miss the cut this weekend were defending champion Y.E Yang, U.S. Open winner Graeme McDowell, British Open winner Louis Oosthuizen and former Northwestern standout Luke Donald.

Senior moment: Tom Lehman, the 2010 Senior PGA Champion, made a hole-in-one on the par-3 17th at Whistling Straits during Saturday's third round.

Lehman used a 4-iron from 217 yards for his first ace in PGA Championship competition. Fredrik Jacobson of Sweden recorded the last hole-in-one in a PGA Championship at Oakland Hills Country Club in 2008.

Get your kicks: Sixty-sixes were wild in the second round.

Vijay Singh, who won his second PGA Championship at Whistling Straits in 2004, was one of four players to shoot 6-under 66 in the weather-delayed second round. Jason Duffner, J.B. Holmes and Brendon de Jonge also fired 66s.
