More government isn't the answer

I'm writing in response to Rosemary Colbert's letter "Public servants paid handsomely," in which she addresses the key point that so-called public servants are given often lifetime financial security at the expense of the rest of us, who aren't lucky enough to be a ward of the taxpayers.

Yes, the situation is disgusting. Yes, this is blatant cronyism without any sense of responsibility to the taxpayers. And yes, we need to remove the responsible elected "officials" from office at the first available opportunity.

Lately, we've been hearing stories of this nature with more and more frequency, and I believe that it points to an even bigger problem: We the people are going broke at the expense of the state. Our nation is further in debt than it ever has been.

As someone with most of his life ahead of him, I'm very concerned for the future of our nation and, locally, our community. Government's solution to every problem is more government, more programs and more officials taking more taxes. But does it ever work? Has the state shown that it's willing to have the discipline to be financially responsible and put the people first? Absolutely not. They've done the opposite: Deficits, government and taxes grow while we pay the price.

No longer can we count on the government to fix our troubles.

In November, we must seek out and elect candidates who stand behind the principle that more government is bad and less government is good. Give the power back to the people as it was intended, let us rely on ourselves and stop trusting politicians who promise to solve our problems, but only ever solve their own.
