Truck crash causes power outage in Carol Stream
More than 10 hours after a vehicle accident caused a power outage in Carol Stream, ComEd crews were still working late Thursday night to restore power.
An undetermined number of homes and businesses lost power around 1 p.m., officials said, when a trailer truck did not adequately lower its bed and the bed hooked onto power lines.
The truck tried to release from the wires, then pulled the down the connecting utility pole, officials added.
Police officials closed off the area near Schmale and St. Charles roads to work on restoring power, and village President Frank Saverino said about 15 ComEd trucks were still on site at about 10:30 p.m. Thursday.
Police were also directing traffic due to powerless signals.
"It's a mess out here," Saverino said. "Their goal is to restore power by 11:30 p.m., but I'm not sure because it's dark and hectic."
The outage affected homes and businesses from North Avenue to Geneva Road, west to Gary Avenue and east to Meadow Lane.
Fire officials said their department was running on a generator, and Saverino said local businesses like Culvers were working to maintain their refrigerated inventory.
The truck driver was issued two tickets, Saverino added, but he was unsure of the exact citations.
