Jenks as closer again? Not yet
Bobby Jenks was good against the Twins Tuesday night, but not good enough to reclaim his closer's job.
"Not yet," said White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen. "I want to see him one more time to see how he's doing. I want him to grab his job. I want him to be the guy. We all want that. Maybe he's the one who doesn't believe we want him there, but we do want him there."
Jenks has declined to speak to the media since blowing a 4-1 lead in the ninth inning at Detroit last Thursday.
He returned to the mound against Minnesota on Tuesday and pitched a scoreless inning.
If Jenks returns to form, which is debatable considering he is 0-2 with a 9.35 ERA since the all-star break, J.J. Putz and Matt Thornton can go back to setting him up in the seventh and eighth innings.
"I'm the one who keeps saying every day that if Bobby is our closer, our bullpen is a lot better and a lot stronger," Guillen said. "I want Bobby to be the closer. It's not what I want. It's what we have. I can want a lot of things. But can he help us to do that? Yes. In the meanwhile, he has to show us he can still be our guy."
Beckham's back: After missing two games with a strained groin, second baseman Gordon Beckham was back in the starting lineup Wednesday.
"It is fine," said Beckham, who batted ninth and was 0-for-1 with a walk and a sacrifice bunt. "It's a little bit sore from working out a little bit yesterday, but it's definitely good enough to go. I want to get back in there, so that's what I'm doing."
Jones scratched: Andruw Jones was scheduled to start in right field Wednesday, with Carlos Quentin moving to designated hitter.
Jones was lifted with back stiffness. Quentin went back to right field and Dayan Viciedo was the DH.
It was a tough night for Viciedo, who grounded into a double play and struck out twice while going 0-for-4. The rookie has yet to draw a walk in 78 at-bats since coming up from Class AAA Charlotte on June 18.
Baines still recovering: Harold Baines has been back with the White Sox for two weeks after having right knee replacement surgery in mid-June.
Baines hopes to be resume coaching first base by the end of the month.
"I'm going to see the doctor (Thursday)," Baines said. "We'll see what he says. I'm able to get around, but being out there for three hours and having to move side to side and worry about line drives coming at me, I don't know if I'm ready for that yet."
