Artists put miniatures on display in Batavia

While the artistic talent at the Art In Your Eye festival may be larger than life, some of their work will be miniature.

Special pieces will be on display in some of the participating artists' booths - volunteer pieces by the festival's artists that are no bigger than 5-by-5 inches and adhere to the theme of "eye."

According to Art Director Erin Melloy, organizers want artists to think outside of the box.

"We get everything from books to sculptures," Melloy said. "We had some butterflies with eyes (on their wings), a purse with tiger's-eye marble in the design - all kinds of creative things."

This year, 12 artists will be participating and the best judged piece will receive a $500 ribbon.

The winner will be chosen Sunday, and a silent auction will be held for last year's miniatures. All proceeds from the miniature auction will be donated back to the festival to keep it going.

Prices for each miniature vary, but minimum bids are $50. The auction has already begun, as last year's pieces have been on display in various places around town. Bidding will be ongoing.

"I buy something almost every year if I have time," Melloy said.

Festival goers can walk around Art In Your Eye and see the miniatures in each of the 12 artists' booths, giving patrons the chance to talk to artists about their pieces before winners are announced.

The miniatures show has been going on for three years, and Melloy hopes it will continue to be an enjoyable part of the festival.

"We are trying to create something fun for artists and patrons," she said. "Not a lot of artists do it, but the ones who do really enjoy it."
