Space station astronauts take 2nd crack at repairs
CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- Space station astronauts are back outside again, attempting urgent repairs.
The International Space Station has been operating with only half its usual cooling capability ever since an ammonia pump failed one-and-a-half weeks ago. Science research is on hold and unnecessary equipment is off until the pump can be replaced. The cooling system is crucial for keeping electronics from overheating.
On Wednesday morning, astronauts Douglas Wheelock and Tracy Caldwell Dyson floated outside for the second time in five days. The last time they tried to remove the broken pump, toxic ammonia coolant spewed out. Flight controllers have devised a new plan to avoid any more major leakage. A third spacewalk will be needed to finish the job.
