Michigan State hopes to end title drought

EAST LANSING, Mich. -- Michigan State is openly talking about ending its Big Ten title drought and finally getting back to the Rose Bowl.

The Spartans back up their boasts by saying they have one of the best defensive players in the country and an experienced quarterback.

History is working against them.

Michigan State's last conference championship was in 1990. The Spartans have not played in Pasadena, Calif., since the 1987 season.

Coach Mark Dantonio says the possibilities of ending both streaks are real because his fourth team is the most talented he's had.

All-American linebacker Greg Jones will lead a defense that desperately needs to get better against the pass. Kirk Cousins is back after ranking among the conference's best quarterbacks.
