Williams aware of good team chemistry

White Sox general manager Kenny Williams had a deal in place for Lance Berkman about two weeks ago before the veteran hitter exercised his no-trade clause and wound up going to the Yankees.

Williams also has pursued Adam Dunn and, more recently, Carlos Delgado.

No moves have been made, yet, and that's OK with the Sox' GM.

Williams told reporters in Baltimore on Sunday that he's cognizant of the strong chemistry inside the White Sox' clubhouse.

"I knew that going into it," Williams said. "And that's why I felt unless it was an impact type guy and a guy who fit with them, we weren't going to do something just to do something.

"It had to be an impact-type guy. And I doubt very seriously if any one of them would have been complaining if that impact guy would have been walking through the clubhouse.

"They have to do what they have to do, and I have to do what I see as best as well. Sometimes they're in conflict with one another, and sometimes they're not. But generally, when I've had someone walk through that door that I know will be received well, it's been received well."

A.J. update: One day after twisting his left ankle, White Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski wasn't in the starting lineup Sunday against the Orioles.

It was a scheduled day off, and Pierzynski might be back on the field Monday night as the Sox wrap up a four-game series against Baltimore.

"He told me he should be out there," manager Ozzie Guillen told reporters. "He has some color in there (ankle), but he should play tomorrow."

More injuries: According to White Sox trainer Herm Schneider, Jake Peavy is expected to rest until the end of August after having July 14 surgery to repair a detached latissimus dorsi muscle in his right posterior shoulder.

"Obviously, it was a major deal," general manager Kenny Williams told reporters. "But as far as the prognosis, I haven't been given any reason to think he won't be ready for spring training."

As for outfielder Jared Mitchell, the Sox' first-round pick in the 2009 draft, he continues to recover from a torn tendon on the inside of his left ankle, an injury that occurred in spring training.

According to Schneider, Mitchell has been working out at Class A Winston-Salem and is expected to be ready to play in the Instructional League in the fall.
