Color finally chosen for new West Dundee sidewalk
After much hemming and hawing, the West Dundee village board decided on a color and type of pavement for the sidewalk replacement program in the downtown area.
Heritage brown or red charcoal. Premiere pavers or the standard product? Trustees mulled these options for a while last Monday night before a majority of the board decided on the premiere pavers in red charcoal.
Some trustees were concerned about the color not matching with the surrounding landscape. But red charcoal is also known as rustic red, which is already in place in some areas.
The original motion was for heritage brown, but that option died for lack of a second.
The cost of the project will be about $13,000 with the village opting to purchase a few extra pallets of pavers in case the need for replacement should arise. The extra five pallets will cost about $500 and the cost of the actual project will be about $12,500.
The work you see while driving along Main Street, or Route 72, through West Dundee is an Illinois Department of Transportation project to replace the planter boxes along the roadway.
Once the planters are completed, Trinity Landscape of Northern Illinois will begin the sidewalk project from about Second Street to the river. The bluestone pavers will also be replaced.
Work on the sidewalk is expected to last throughout the summer and village officials say the work may not be completed before this year's Heritage Fest Sept. 17-19.
Carpentersville is also looking to kick-start a few construction projects of their own. The village board on Tuesday gave the thumbs up for staff to submit applications for a couple of grants for projects along Huntley Road.
The Randall Road to Route 31 project is a joint venture with the villages of Carpentersville and West Dundee, as well as Kane County.
The village had previously applied for a US Department of Transportation Grant, but the project did not rank highly enough among the $50 billion in applications for $1.5 billion in available funding.
The USDOT has subsequently opened applications for a second phase of the Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery II (TIGER II) program. This time, there is $600 million in available funding.
The three jurisdictions of Carpentersville, West Dundee and Kane County agreed to a cost-sharing agreement of 25 percent, 25 percent and 50 percent, respectively.
The second grant application seeks to obtain funding for the Route 31/Huntley Road intersection improvement project. That project will add decorative roadway lighting, which would be an extension of the historic decorative lighting along the Main Street Bridge, as well as the undergrounding of overhead utilities.
