Fifth annual Gurnee Park District Cardboard Regatta set to sail

On Wednesday, Aug. 11, from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Gurnee Park District (GPD) camp counselors will captain approximately 15 boats crafted from cardboard, plastic drop clothes, packing tape and duct tape in attempt to sail across Hunt Club Park Aquatic Center, 900 N. Hunt Club Road in Gurnee.

GPD campers have been charged with building the unpredictable vessels and will observe the competition from the pool deck. The Regatta is the final Special Wednesday Event and culminates another successful year of GPD Summer Camp.

"This is an absolutely comical event to observe and a blast for the counselors. The campers work very hard at developing what they feel will be a "seaworthy" ship and work as a team using skills developed during summer camp programs," said Sabrina Hinkens, GPD youth recreation supervisor. She added, "We have also changed the event to a tournament style competition this year where winners of each heat move on to compete in a final race to win a year's worth of bragging rights!"
