Other sites eyed for Cubs' new spring training complex
MESA, Ariz. -- With plans for the Mesa Waveyard development stalled, a Loop 202 site for a Chicago Cubs spring training complex is gaining attention.
Mesa leaders told the East Valley Tribune they are increasingly doubtful Waveyard can get funding in place by a July 2011 deadline. If Waveyard falls through, Mesa could instead sell the city-owned Riverview Park site to the Cubs.
The Cubs have expressed interest in three Mesa sites downtown, northeast Mesa and a spot near Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport, although the team has lost interest in that site.
Councilman Scott Somers says the Riverview Park site only recently came into focus.
Somers says the team likes the location in part because of its freeway access and visibility.
