IEMA: Consider livestock, pets during a disaster

SPRINGFIELD -- The Illinois Emergency Management Agency says residents should think about their pets and livestock when planning for disasters.

The agency says it will focus on increasing awareness of pets and livestock disaster preparedness during the month of August. Experts say preparing can make a tornado, earthquake or flood less stressful for animals.

Pet safety kits are a good idea. Some items they should include are a three-day supply of pet food and water, pet medicines, copies of pet registration and other documents, leashes and a pet carrier.

It's suggested livestock owners who must evacuate leave their animals in an appropriate area and provide enough food and water for 72 hours.
