Cumberland, Maryland police probe reported abduction

CUMBERLAND, Md. -- Authorities in the Cumberland area say they're investigating the apparent abduction of a 6-year-old girl who was found about seven miles from her home a short time after her mother reported her missing.

Cumberland police say the child told investigators she was taken Thursday afternoon by a man in a black van.

The girl's mother reported early in the afternoon that her daughter had apparently wandered off while playing outside their home in the city.

Police were called at about 2:30 p.m. to a rural residence north of town by a man who told police he had found the girl outside his door.

She was taken to a local hospital for an evaluation and treatment of unspecified injuries.
