Cops seek South Elgin man after attack

South Elgin police are asking for help in tracking down a 34-year-old man accused of sexually assaulting a teen Tuesday morning.

A warrant has been issued for Roman Alvarez, of the 300 block of South Gilbert Street, South Elgin.

He faces four counts of criminal sexual assault, two counts of kidnapping and 12 counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, police said.

The criminal sexual assault is the most serious felony charge, which carries a sentence of four to 15 years in prison upon conviction.

"He's on the run. That's why we're asking for assistance," said South Elgin Detective Sgt. Mike Doty. "He may have a history of depression. We would like to find him. (Do not) approach him but let us know where he was seen at."

Doty said Alvarez is not believed to be armed, but has been on the lam since police were called to his residence at about 7:30 a.m. Tuesday for a domestic dispute in which the victim had locked herself in the bathroom.

Doty said Alvarez fled the scene; the victim, a girl younger than 17, did not sustain any serious or life-threatening physical injuries.

A message left at the Child Advocacy Center in Geneva, which conducts investigations into crimes against children for the Kane County State's Attorney's office, was not immediately returned Thursday afternoon.

The state's attorney's office declined to comment on the case, saying the court file was sealed.

According to Kane County court records, Alvarez does not have a criminal record other than traffic offenses.

He is described as Hispanic, about 5-foot-9, 175 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing black gym shorts and gray athletic shoes.
