Burris to appeal order on special Senate election

SPRINGFIELD -- Sen. Roland Burris plans to challenge a ruling that would bump him out of office in November.

The Chicago Democrat has notified the federal court that he intends to appeal. His lawyer did not immediately return calls seeking comment.

Burris was appointed to the Senate last year after Barack Obama was elected president.

Federal Judge John Grady ruled this week that the appointment doesn't cover the entire Senate term. A special election must be held to decide who serves the final two months.

Grady said the special election will include the candidates already running for a new Senate term.

That means Burris would be left out and the major-party nominees would be Democrat Alexi Giannoulias and Republican Mark Kirk.
