White Sox buy contract of Chris Sale

DETROIT -- Prior to tonight's game at Detroit, the Chicago White Sox purchased the contract of left-handed pitcher Chris Sale from Class AAA Charlotte.

Sale, 21, combined to go 0-0 with a 2.61 ERA (3 ER/10.1 IP) and 19 strikeouts in 11 relief appearances this season between Charlotte and Class A Winston-Salem. The 6-foot-6, 175-pounder posted a 2.84 ERA (2 ER/6.1 IP) with 15 strikeouts in seven games with the Knights after beginning his professional career with the Warthogs, where he compiled a 2.25 ERA (1 ER/4.0 IP) with four strikeouts in four games.

Sale was the White Sox first-round selection (13th overall) in the June First-Year Player Draft out of Florida Gulf Coast University. He becomes the first player from the 2010 draft class to reach the major leagues and first Sox player since Alex Fernandez in 1990 to reach the majors in the season in which he was drafted.

Sale will wear uniform No. 49.
