Summer campers take over Lake Co. Fair

The paths of the Lake County Fair were flowing with hand-holding lines of tie-dye T-shirts and the lawns filled with sack lunch picnics, as summer camps took over the fairgrounds Wednesday.

Groups from local day camps and churches brought busloads of children to the fair on what many campers said was their favorite day of the summer.

After finishing their lunches, campers migrated to the animal tents before rides and carnival games opened at noon.

A group of 6-year-old campers from the Good Times summer day camp in Libertyville strolled through the goat and calf pens before stopping to watch a baby goat get its first trimming.

"It looks so cool," Caitlin Baele said. "I want them to cut my hair."

Packs of campers from the KinderCare camp in Mundelein lined the metal rails of the fence for the pig and goat showings, with the animals and campers letting out similar squeals during the judgings.

Once the games and rides opened later in the day, most campers abandoned the animals and made their way to the ring tosses, weigh guessers and funnel cake vendors.

Josh Linck, an 8-year-old from the Good Times camp, headed straight for the plastic bass fishing game with high hopes.

"The games are my favorite part," Linck said as he fished his third bass out of the swirling miniature pond. He walked away with three toy snakes dangling over his shoulder, a successful outing.

Linck's friend A.J. Nelson, who joined him at the game, said the game was his favorite, but he was more excited for the rides.

"This is one of the best days of camp," Nelson said.

The favorite ride of many of the youngest campers was the carnival-staple potato sack slide.
