Viking Summer Sunset 5K races step off on Wednesday

The Fox River Trail Runners will host the 13th annual Viking Summer Sunset Races on Wednesday, July 28, at Geneva High School Sports Complex. There are four races for the whole family. The Jamie LaForce Youth Mile starts at 8:15 p.m., Junior Jog at 6:30 p.m., Toddler Trot at 6:45 p.m. and 5K at 7:15 p.m.

Online registration is available at signmeup.com/70139. Race-day registration is from 5:30 p.m. until 20 minutes before race time. Further race information can be gathered at foxrivertrailrunners.org. The traditional tie-dyed commemorative race shirt is guaranteed to all preregistered registrants and while supply lasts for race-day registrants.

Race fees are $25 on race day. Youth Mile is $13, Junior Jog is $7 and Toddler Trot is $5.

The Viking Summer Sunset is a July tradition. The 5K race is a fast and flat USATF certified course winding through neighborhood and the Geneva Sports Complex.

The 5K awards will be presented to the overall male and female winners as well as age group winners for these age groups: 0-14, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70 plus. Awards are five deep in the 0-14 and 15-19 categories.

The Youth Mile, age 12 and younger awards, will be presented to the first five winners in 0-7, 8-9 and 10-12 age groups.

Tom LaForce will serve as the official starter for the Jamie LaForce Youth Mile. The youth mile is named in honor of Jamie LaForce, an active charity runner and member of the Fox River Trail Runners who died in 2001 from a series of rare brain lesions.

The Fox River Trail Runners Club is a nonprofit organization founded in 1995 to promote running in the central Fox Valley.
