Forefathers turning in their graves

The playing of the "1812 Overture" by Tschaikovsky at celebrations of the Declaration of Independence is a national travesty. While our independence was characterized by freedom and human rights for the common man, the "1812 Overture" celebrates the victory of the most despotic regime in all of Europe, the Russian monarchy over the forces of freedom for man, the French army.

The Russian regime was characterized by despotism, servility and suppression. It is estimated that over 1 million prisoners were held in Siberia by the monarchy, which was also a brutal police state.

No less than the Grant Park Symphony Orchestra and the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington played this piece on the 4th of July at our independence celebrations as well as many other orchestras. Mayor Daley and President Obama should stop this insult to our Founding Fathers, who probably turn in their graves every time this piece is played on the 4th of July.
