Families of cancer patients heroes, too

Heroes. Who are they? They are our soldiers, police, firefighters, doctors, nurses - and heroes also include the people who fight cancer and their families.

One of those heroes is my mom, Pat Baker. She died of cancer on July 23, 2009. Mom fought it with humor, courage and determination. Until the end she fought with her mighty Irish strength.

My dad is also a hero for the strength he showed in supporting and standing by his wife of 53 years. Now that's being a hero! Two other heroes are my brother, Rick, and his wife who have stared in the face of breast cancer twice and thankfully won.

Cancer is an awful disease. Lets all recognize the heroes who are fighting cancer now. Your strength and determination to fight this nasty disease is what makes you a hero. To the loved ones who are fighting with you, don't give up. You are heroes, too.
