Elgin man gets 5 years for shooting
An Elgin man was sentenced Thursday to five years in prison for his role in a January shooting.
Dylan Petersen, 18, of the 400 block of South Street, pleaded guilty to one count of unlawful use of a weapon by a street gang member, a Class 2 felony.
Assistant Kane County State's Attorney Scott Schwertley said Petersen was driven to the 400 block of Lowrie Court early Jan. 7 and opened fire on a house. Schwertley said no one was injured in the apparent gang shooting, but the house was damaged.
Petersen was arrested in February after police searched his home and recovered a .357 revolver and ammunition, along with four juveniles who had been drinking and a runaway from Carpentersville, according to court documents.
In exchange for Petersen's guilty plea, charges including aggravated discharge of a firearm, a Class 1 felony, were dismissed. If convicted of the more serious charge at trial, he could have been sentenced to up to 15 years in prison.
By law, Petersen must serve at least half of his sentence. He was given credit for about five months served in the county jail.
Petersen was previously convicted of possession of drug paraphernalia in 2009, authorities said.
