Dist. 62 issues letter on Algonquin School opening
In a letter to parents Thursday, Des Plaines Elementary District 62 leaders said they are working hard to ensure classes begin at Algonquin Middle School on Aug. 23, even as they secure contingency space for 700 students in case they need it.
In the letter, district officials named the Des Plaines Park District site they are considering as an option - Prairie Lakes Complex near Algonquin School. The other two facilities that have offered space are Oakton Community College and Maryville Academy.
A laborers strike halted districtwide construction projects at five of the 11 schools for 17 days, but crews have been working feverishly since a tentative agreement was reached earlier this week. All projects are supposed to be completed before school starts.
"Our goal is to have work at Algonquin completed and secure the necessary occupancy permits and approvals necessary for all students and staff to return to the building as scheduled on Aug. 23," the letter read.
The contingency plan includes restricting access to certain portions of the school where construction is ongoing, and possibly using the alternate sites for some or all Algonquin students if the building is not approved for use by Aug. 23.
