Center stage for cats and dogs at Algonquin fest

A handful of cats and dogs will raid the Algonquin Founders' Days Festival on Friday, July 23, in an attempt to win one of 12 categories as part of the annual Dog and Cat Show.

According to event chairwoman Rusty Cherbak, who has been running the event for 15 years, people of all ages and pets older than 1 year are invited to compete for six separate "dog-" and "cat-" egories.

With registration open until an hour before the event's slated 10 a.m. start, Cherbak urged those with animals, both big and small, to make the journey and have a good time.

"Cat"-egories include: Owner Look-a-like, Most Exotic, Costume, Biggest, Smallest and Longest Whiskers.

"Dog"-egories include: Owner Look-a-like, Costume, Biggest, Smallest, Best Trick and Face Only Mom Could Love.

Although the costume portion does not have to relate to the festival's theme, "All That Glitters is Gold," Cherbak said she expects several attendees will dress the part.

Trophies will be awarded to those who place first in each category, while ribbons will be awarded to first, second and third places.
