Two arrested in Hoffman Estates carjacking case

Hoffman Estates Police are planning to charge two men with various crimes following the carjacking of a woman's 1999 Nissan Altima early Tuesday.

Lt. Rich Russo of the Hoffman Estates Police Department said charges are expected against two men in their 20s. He would not speculate about the charges, but said the two are in custody and charges are under review by the Cook County States Attorney's Office.

He gave this account:

Two men approached a 36-year-old woman at about 2:20 a.m. in the parking lot of an apartment complex in the 700 block of Salem Drive.

The female victim had just exited her vehicle and locked the door of the car. One of the men grabbed the woman by her hair and forced her head down, displaying a knife.

The man, who was wearing a ski mask and black gloves, demanded the keys to her car and her cell phone. After getting them, the offender pushed the victim to the ground, ran to her car, jumped in and sped away. The woman ran inside and reported the car theft.

Police put out a bulletin, and the car was spotted by Streamwood police a short time later on Route 59. Following a short vehicle chase and a short foot chase, two men were taken into custody.

The female victim was not physically hurt.
