Smoking Popes at Penny Road Pub in Barrington

Chicago's pop-punk favorites the Smoking Popes will play a show in the suburbs this weekend. The Popes were an important part of the punk-influenced rock sound that emerged in the 1990s (think Weezer, Green Day), but the band hasn't reached the commercial heights of those groups. Here's a chance to see why that's so unfair.

Smoking Popes headline a show Friday, July 23, at the Penny Road Pub, 545 Penny Road, Barrington. Also on the bill are Tapeworm 2010, Onasis, Last Second Signal and Minus the Girl. $10. Doors open at 6 p.m. Call (847) 428-0562.

Pop croonersDaryl Hall and John Oates probably never made any rock critic's "best-of" list, but they created some undeniably catchy pop-soul hits during the 1970s and 1980s. (And yes, they also made some cheesy songs - I'm looking at you, "Adult Education"!) Seeing them belt out "She's Gone" or "You Make My Dreams" would make this a good night for me. Info: 8 p.m. Friday, July 23, at the Chicago Theater, 175 N. State St., Chicago. $38-$103. Call (800) 745-3000 or visit ticketmaster.com.Musical marriagePost Honeymoon, a husband-and-wife rock duo (featuring Schaumburg native Rachel Shindelman on keyboards and lead vocals), produces a haunting, hypnotic pop sound with ambient electronic accents and driving beats. They play the Hideout this weekend.Post Honeymoon performs with Coins and Small Awesome at 9 p.m. Saturday, July 24, at the Hideout, 1354 W. Wabansia, Chicago. $8. Call (773) 227-4433.
