Guillen has faith in Hudson
MINNEAPOLIS - Daniel Hudson was not good in his first start for the White Sox.
The 23-year-old right-hander gets another crack Monday night when the Sox open a three-game series against Seattle at Safeco Field, and manager Ozzie Guillen is going to be standing tall in Hudson's corner.
"I'm pushing for him," Guillen said. "I want a kid from this organization with that talent to make it through it so he doesn't have to go back to the minor leagues.
"That's my goal. When you do that you feel satisfaction, when one of the kids come out and you keep him and build him up and he has success throughout his career."
Hudson had plenty of success at Class AAA Charlotte this season, going 11-4 with a 3.47 ERA.
But in his first start in place of injured Jake Peavy, against the Kansas City Royals in the last game before the all-star break, Hudson had no feel for his off-speed pitches while allowing 5 runs in 4 innings.
"When you don't have good command and you're up in the zone a lot and you're not throwing your off-speed for strikes, that makes it tough," Hudson said. "Hopefully I can go out there (Monday) and put a few more zeros up, throw more strikes and keep going after that."
Is Hudson going to be pulled from the rotation if he has another bad outing?
"I don't make trades," Guillen said. "I don't have the ability to do it. In the meanwhile, I said last week my goal is to get this kid to the big-league team and have success here.
"This is the kid we count on for the future, so why not do it here?"
Garcia gets it done: Freddy Garcia was in line for his 10th win of the season Sunday after pitching 6 innings against the Twins and allowing 3 runs on 11 hits.
Garcia came away with a no-decision after Bobby Jenks imploded in the ninth inning.
"I was in trouble every inning, but I made good pitches when I needed and only gave up 3 (runs)," Garcia said. "I didn't walk anybody. I was right there around the plate. I had to make good pitches. I give my 6 innings and I was done."
Error of his ways: Omar Vizquel started at third for the White Sox on Sunday for the third time in four games.
Dayan Viciedo played third Friday night and made another error, and that prompted manager Ozzie Guillen to have a talk with the 21-year-old rookie.
"I told Viciedo, 'We didn't lose the game because you made those errors,' " Guillen said. "It's part of the game. Mental error, I will criticize. Viciedo has played very well at third base for us.
"I'm going to keep him in the lineup the same way we've been doing it right now. I won't change my mind about him."
