Elgin man arrested on 6th DUI
An Elgin man needs $50,000 cash to get out of jail on what authorities say is his sixth DUI arrest.
Juan J. Santana, 37, of the 200 block of Illinois Avenue, Elgin, has been charged with driving under the influence and driving on a revoked license - both felonies.
East Dundee Police Chief Terry Mee said that at 12:55 a.m. Friday, Santana was parked in the middle of the road at South River Street and Maiden Lane, then accelerated forward once an officer approached him with flashing lights.
Police said Santana then drove his 2005 Nissan Altima over the curb and onto a private area owned by Haeger Potteries.
Mee said Santana failed all four sobriety tests and refused a breath test that would have measured his blood alcohol level.
During a Friday morning bond hearing, Kane County Judge Bruce W. Lester counted five prior DUI arrests on Santana's record.
Santana admitted to spending time in prison on a DUI and also said his license was revoked because of a DUI.
Lester ordered him to pay $50,000 cash to secure his release while this latest case is pending.
"These charges and your record present a severe danger to this community," Lester told Santana.
Santana is due in court July 28 at the Kane County Judicial Center.
DUI, in this case, is a Class 2 felony with a prison sentence range between three and seven years.
Based on his prior DUI conviction, Santana may qualify for extended time behind bars.
