Is Blanco returning soon for second stint with Fire?
The Fire will announce the signing of a Designated Player after Saturday night's SuperLiga match against the New England Revolution.
Speculation centers on two Mexican players: Cuauhtemoc Blanco and Nery Castillo.
Blanco, 37, is the only DP in Fire history. He left the club after last season to sign with Veracruz in the Mexican second division, but his contract there allowed him to leave after the World Cup.
Blanco also has drawn interest from Mexican side Irapuato.
Both players have played forward and midfielder.
Castillo, 26, has had a checkered career, playing most of his career in Greece with stints in the Ukraine and in England with Manchester City. He left Shakhtar Donetsk in the Ukraine when he refused to let a teammate take a penalty kick. He was not added to Mexico's World Cup roster.
Blanco did play for Mexico during the World Cup, scoring on a penalty kick.
Although MLS has a salary cap around $2.55 million this season per team, each team is allowed to sign up to three DPs for salaries that exceed the league maximum. Only part of a DP's salary is counted toward the team salary cap.
The Fire has one roster spot open, having sent midfielder Julio Martinez back to his Mexican club, Leon, ending the loan agreement between the clubs.
