Elgin teen killed in Dundee Township crash

Kane County Sheriff's police continue to investigate a traffic crash that left a 19-year-old Elgin man dead in unincorporated Dundee Township Thursday night.

Omar Medrano, of the 600 block of Mariner Drive, was pronounced dead following the accident on Route 25 at 9:25 p.m., said Lt. Patrick Gengler of the Kane County Sheriff's Department.

Gengler said Friday that Medrano was driving his 2002 Lexus north on Route 25 and approaching Albert Drive when a 1999 Chevrolet Suburban heading south on Route 25 turned east onto Albert.

The turn caused Medrano to brake in an attempt to avoid colliding with the Suburban, Gengler said. The Lexus swerved to avoid a collision, before flipping over.

Medrano was transported to Sherman Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, Gengler said.

He said the crash remains under investigation by Kane County Sheriff's Detectives and the Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team. The area was shut down by police until 3 a.m., Gengler said.

No citations have been issued. Gengler said detectives have not ruled out if speed, drugs, or alcohol were a factor in the crash. Further information is expected early next week, Gengler said late Friday.

Medrano's younger sister, Carmen Medrano, 17, remembered him as a fun-loving big brother who loved cars and wanted to be a police officer.

"He was a nice brother and just liked to play around and be with the family," she said. "He liked to have a lot of friends."

Funeral arrangements are pending.
