Local man shows what coaching is all about

My wife and I just attended our grandchild's last baseball game of the 2010 season. She plays in the North Aurora Baseball Association. It has been a thrill watching these kids develop into a team with improved skills and friendship.

The most amazing thing about this team has been their coach - Steve Butcher. I have watched him coach for the last two years and he is the most upbeat coach a kid could ask for. He never berates the kids or gets disgusted if they make an error. He will call them over and offer them guidance on how to do better next play. He plays the team fairly, not dividing them up between good and bad, but unites them as one team. Did they go undefeated? No. Did they enjoy the concept of playing great baseball and having fun? Yes.

My hat goes off to this fine coach and the team he led. Oh yeah, by the way, they won their last game to become champs for the season. Typical of the coach, he let them bask in their accomplishment, as he stood in the outer circle beaming with pride.
