Man sentenced to mental hospital in dad's killing

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- A southwestern Illinois man accused of using a wood-splitting maul to beat his father to death has been sentenced to 58 years in a mental hospital after being found not guilty by reason of insanity.

Thirty-five-year-old James Lane of Wood River was sentenced last week in Madison County after a judge ruled Lane couldn't appreciate the criminality of his misconduct.

Lane had been charged with first-degree murder and aggravated battery in the October 2008 killing of 63-year-old James Lane.

Authorities say the elder Lane was killed in his rural Bethalto home after being hit on the head with the maul, which is a heavy wedge attached to a long handle. James Lane's mother also was hit by the maul but wasn't seriously injured.
