DePaul releases Pitchford from Letter of Intent

DePaul University announced today that Walter Pitchford has been released from his National Letter of Intent to play men's basketball.

Pitchford, a 6-10 center from Grand Rapids, Mich., signed the NLI last November.

"When we originally denied the request for release from the NLI, there were external circumstances that came about surrounding the request," said head coach Oliver Purnell. "We wanted to let the process play itself out and after the NLI committee completed the appeal process, the decision confirmed what we felt were valid reasons to deny the request. The coaching staff reevaluated our situation this weekend and decided the best course of action at this point was to grant the release."

Pitchford played for New Creations Christian School in Richmond, Ind., last season.
