Upcoming 'Bark for Life' raises money to fight cancer

Canine companions are invited to join in the fight against cancer, at the American Cancer Society's Bark For Life, at 9 a.m. on Aug. 15, at the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates.

The event includes a one-mile walk, canine contests such as the dog that most resembles their owner, and entertaining activities for dogs and owners alike.

The Bark For Life event and fundraiser honors the lifelong love, support, and compassion dogs provide to cancer patients and their families during times of both struggle and joy. Canines offer emotional support and comfort to their owners and also act as therapy and service dogs.

"Bark for Life is a great way to personally make a difference and raise money for the American Cancer Society, while having fun with our dogs and our fellow dog lovers," said Alison Martin, chairwoman of the Bark For Life of the Northwest Suburbs.

More than 100 dogs and owners participated in last year's Bark For Life. Owners can register online or at the event; the cost is $25 in advance or $35 on Aug. 15.

Each participant is encouraged to have a minimum fundraising goal of $100. "Dog Lovers" who raise at least $100 will receive a Bark For Life bandanna; "Golden Bones" with at least $250 in pledges will get a bandanna and a commemorative T-shirt, and "Wonder Dogs" who raise $500 or more will get a T-shirt and a Bark For Life leash. The money raised through the event will aid the American Cancer Society's support services for local patients and their families, as well as cancer research programs, community education and advocacy initiatives.

Bark For Life of the Northwest Suburbs is one of 13 canine Relay For Life events throughout Illinois in July and August. To get involved, call the American Cancer Society at (847) 368-1166 or visit www.barkforlifenws.com.
