Dundee Township Public Library plans crafts event for kids
School-aged children are invited to tie on their smocks and head for "Country Crafts" at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 13, at the Dundee Township Public Library, 555 Barrington Ave. (Route 68) in East Dundee.
Come and enjoy some artistic fun as you create a country craft to take home and enjoy. The event is in keeping with this summer's reading program theme, "Reading Country." This year's program has broken all previous records, as well more than 1,100 children have signed up to participate.
Kindergarteners and first-graders must be accompanied by an adult. The program is free, but registration is required. To register, stop by the Children's Desk at the library, call (847) 428-3661, ext. 310, or visit the "Events & Registration" page at dundeelibrary.info.
Alphabet Soup: Dundee Township Public Library's preschool storytime, Alphabet Soup, resumes this month for its littlest patrons. The group meets on Tuesdays and Wednesdays during the last three weeks in July at 10:30 a.m. in the library's meeting room. This free, three-week series will include puppets, stories, activities, and songs for preschool children and a caregiver. No registration is required.
For information, contact the children's department (847) 428-3661, ext. 310 or dundeelibrary.info.
Book recycling event: On Saturday, July 17, the Friends of the Dundee Township Public Library will hold a book recycling event in the parking lot of what used to be Santa's Village Amusement Park, off Route 25, East Dundee. Books will be accepted for recycling from 8 a.m. until 1 p.m.
All kinds of books, both hardcover and paperback, can be dropped off during the event. Several volunteers will be on hand to help unload residents' cars. The event is open to residents of Dundee and surrounding communities.
Members from the Friends group will sort through the books as they are dropped off. Books in good condition will be set aside for upcoming sales or fundraising sponsored by the Friends. Books that are damaged, outdated, or are no longer useful will be responsibly recycled.
This effort is modeled after the successful book-recycling program that has been operated by Kane County over the past nine years in St. Charles. Since 2001, Kane County has recycled an estimated 400,000 pounds of books brought in by county residents during its monthly recycling events.
The Friends are partnering with PaceSetter Books, a St. Charles-based company who has partnered with other library Friends groups in the area and has worked with the county's book recycling program over the last four years. The Friends group is interested in new members. Anyone interested in joining the group to help prepare for its book sales, or those interested in helping out with the group's new recycling program, can call the library at (847) 428-3661 or send an email to friendsofdundeelibrary@yahoo.com. The group invites all to attend their monthly meeting, held every third Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. at the library.
