Cancer fundraiser honors Wheeling man

In honor of a best friend who died too soon, Rob Ruff is helping organize a Wiffle ball home run derby on Sunday at Recreation Park in Arlington Heights.

Joe Marsillo, a 2001 St. Viator High School graduate, fought multiple forms of cancer from July 2007, until he died in March 2010. Marsillo, 26, was an Arlington Heights resident who attended Illinois Wesleyan University where he was a member of the Sigma Pi Fraternity. He finished his studies at the University of Illinois at Chicago, graduating in 2006.

He had a love for his job working for the Village of Wheeling Public Works Department, Ruff said.

Sunday's fundraiser will run from noon until 6 p.m. at Recreation Park, 500 E. Miner St. All proceeds will go to the American Cancer Society.

Besides the home run derby, there will be balloon animals, live music, cheering and stunts by Cheer Illinois Athletics, face painting, bags, a raffle and a silent auction.
