Governors offer support for Boeing tanker

OLYMPIA, Wash. -- Politicians and aerospace workers are rallying in support of Boeing's bid for the U.S. Air Force airborne tanker contract.

Bids are due Friday for the $35 billion contract to build 179 of the planes. Boeing rival European Aeronautic Defence and Space Co. submitted its bid Thursday. Chicago-based Boeing says it will make its offer Friday morning.

Boeing wants to use a version of its 767 passenger jet, which is built in Everett. If successful, it could mean thousands of jobs in Washington state. Several governors, including Chris Gregoire of Washington and Gary Herbert of Utah, plan a news conference.
