Cubs recall right-hander Mitch Atkins
The Cubs today recalled right-handed pitcher Mitch Atkins from Triple-A Iowa and placed right-handed pitcher Brian Schlitter on the 15-day disabled list with a right shoulder impingement (retroactive to July 3).
Atkins is available for tonight's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field. This is his second stint with the Cubs this year, as he was recalled from Iowa June 12 but did not appear in a game before he was optioned, June 15.
The 24-year-old Atkins is 5-2 with one save and a 3.60 ERA (28 ER/70.0 IP) in 18 appearances (10 starts) with Iowa this season. He earned Pacific Coast League Pitcher of the Week honors for May 31-June 6, allowing one earned run in 12.0 innings pitched (0.75 ERA) in two starts during that span. Most recently, he's gone 1-0 and recorded a 3.46 ERA (5 ER/13.0 IP) in his last two starts, June 26 at New Orleans and July 3 at Omaha.
Atkins began the season in the Iowa bullpen before moving to the rotation for his first start on May 9. Overall this season, he has limited opponents to a .232 batting average, including a .229 mark by left-handed hitters and a .234 mark by right-handed hitters.
The righthander joins the Cubs for his third major league stint since he made his big league debut last season when he posted no record in 2.0 scoreless innings covering two relief outings with the Cubs last July.
Schlitter, 24, was selected by Chicago June 26 and made three relief appearances in his first career big league action, holding the opponent scoreless in his first two outings (2.2 IP). He began the season with Triple-A Iowa, going 1-1 with 12 saves and a 4.09 ERA (15 ER/33.0 IP) in 27 games out of the bullpen prior to his promotion.
