Emergency crews on Fox River between Elgin, East Dundee
Emergency crews determined a leaking barrel did not contaminate any water ways Wednesday after authorities got a call that a 55-gallon drum was leaking into the Fox River. Authorities closed off Elgin Avenue from Williams Place in East Dundee to Trout Park Boulevard to the south in Elgin for more than two hours Wednesday afternoon in response to a call for a potentially hazardous material leaking into the Fox River. Authorities also closed off the Fox River Trail.
City of Elgin spokeswoman Sue Olafson said a call came in at 12:41 p.m. stating a 55-gallon drum was leaking an unknown fluid into the Fox River near Duncan Avenue, about one mile north of the Jane Addams Memorial Tollway in East Dundee.
The East Dundee Fire District responded along with other neighboring departments and determined that the spill was contained to the ground surrounding the drum and that the public was not in any danger of exposure, officials said. Fire officials said no chemicals entered the Fox River or neighboring water ways.
The Kane County Office of Emergency Management and Elgin fire and police departments responded to the scene.
A chemical remediation company handled the removal of the chemical, officials said. The incident is under investigation and the name of the chemical was not being released late Wednesday, pending investigation.
