Trio charged in weekend beating near Des Plaines
Three men have been charged with a weekend beating near a Des Plaines-area trailer park that forced doctors to place the victim in a medically-induced coma.
The fight was over the treatment of a family member and fueled by alcohol, the Cook County sheriff's department said. It happened on Saturday near the 7500 block of Elmhurst Road.
The victim wanted to discuss the matter on Sunday, when the other three weren't drinking, police said. Instead the confrontation turned physical, with the victim punched, kicked and struck with a concrete block, police said.
The victim, left unidentified by police, suffered multiple fractures to the jaws and face, as well as a broken right eye cavity, police said. He also sustained a small hemorrhage to his brain's frontal lobe, police added.
Juan Mendez-Romulo, 30, Victor Romulo, 20, and Vicente Jimenez, 20, all of the 7500 block of North Elmhurst Rd. in Elk Grove Township, were arrested and charged with aggravated battery.
Mendez-Romulo was also charged with aggravated domestic battery and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon. Romulo was also charged with aggravated domestic battery.
The victim was conscious on Monday, when investigators interviewed him. He didn't know who started the fight, police said.
The three men appeared in bond court Wednesday in Rolling Meadows. Judge Joel Greenblatt set bond for Mendez-Romulo at $100,000, Romulo at $50,000 and Jimenez at $35,000. They're expected back in court on July 23.
