Cubs bring Berg up, send Stevens down to AAA

The Chicago Cubs today recalled right-handed pitcher Justin Berg from Triple-A Iowa and optioned right-handed pitcher Jeff Stevens to Triple-A.

Berg will be available for this afternoon's game at the Arizona Diamondbacks.

The 26-year-old Berg was a member of Chicago's Opening Day roster and posted no record with a 6.43 ERA (10 ER/14.0 IP) in 14 major league relief appearances. Berg held the opponent scoreless in 10 of his first 13 relief appearances, posting a 2.77 ERA (4 ER/13.0 IP) in those outings through May 7, before allowing six runs in one inning of relief May 8 at Cincinnati to up his earned run average 3.66 points to its current 6.43 mark.

Berg was optioned to Triple-A Iowa on May 21 and is 3-1 with a 3.18 ERA (8 ER/22.2 IP) in 14 minor league relief appearances this season.

Overall, Berg has no record and a 3.81 ERA (11 ER/26.0 IP) in 25 major league relief outings with the Cubs the last two seasons. He made his major league debut with the Cubs in 2009 and posted a 0.75 ERA (1 ER/12.0 IP) in 11 relief appearances.

Stevens has no record and a 5.71 ERA (11 ER/17.1 IP) in 17 major league relief appearances this season. He has no record and a 2.60 ERA (5 ER/17.1 IP) in 12 relief outings with Iowa this year.
