Hoffman Estates man charged with manufacturing controlled substance

Jesse Miller told Hoffman Estates police the green powdery substance they found at his home May 30 as part of a narcotics investigation was incense.

Turns out, it was mescaline, said Cook County Assistant State's Attorney Jennifer Walsh at a bond hearing on Saturday for the 20-year-old Miller, charged with manufacturing a controlled substance, a class X felony that carries a sentence of six to 30 years in prison upon conviction.

After the lab confirmed the substance tested positive for mescaline, police returned to Miller's home in the 700 block of Bode Circle to arrest him, Walsh said.

The officers detected the odor of burned cannabis. They reported finding a pipe, six clear plastic bags containing a green powdery substance and two plastic bags containing another substance, Walsh said, adding that all of the paraphernalia was recovered within 515 feet of a junior high school.

Cook County Circuit Court Judge Anthony Iosco set bond at $150,000 for Miller, who has an open warrant out of Missouri for the manufacture and delivery of a controlled substance, Walsh said.

Miller received one-year conditional discharge in 2009 for providing liquor to a minor, Walsh said. That same year, he spent 14 days in Cook County Jail for possession of a controlled substance. He has a 2008 supervision for the same charge, Walsh said.
