A real catastrophe that will only worsen

The writer who estimates that the drilling moratorium could devastate 40 percent of the Gulf economy is guilty of attempting to create his own wave of hysteria. The drilling moratorium would affect only 32 drilling platforms, a tiny fraction of the approximately 3,600 rigs operating in the Gulf.

To say that the greatest harm being done in the Gulf region is by politics and sensational news coverage, not the oil spill, is just plain wrong headed. Katrina and the earthquake in Haiti were real. Chernobyl, Bhopal and the Exxon Valde were real. The Gulf oil spill is a real catastrophe that is only going to get worse.
