Bartlett ready for Fourth of July festival
The Bartlett Fourth of July Committee, formed in August of 1992 by a few residents who wanted a "hometown celebration that would create memories for our children and our children's' children," plans another festival beginning today that will sport the usual highlights of the Turbo Turtle Race, parade and fireworks.
The festival, on the northwest corner of Stearns and Bartlett roads, begins today.
During the turtle race at 4 p.m. Sunday, July 4, at the Bartlett Aquatic Center, people can cheer on their plastic turtles. About 1,000 turtles will race to win prizes for their corresponding ticket holders in this Bartlett Parks Foundation Fundraiser. Turtle tickets are $10 for one turtle or can be bought in a shell-shocker pack of 11 for $100. Proceeds go toward foundation projects. For information, call (630) 540-4828.
The 2010 Independence Day Parade will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, July 3, beginning at Bartlett Park and traveling south to the Bartlett Festival on Stearns Road. All trucks, cars and trailers must be fully decorated to participate.
Parade entry staging will begin at 11 a.m. on the streets near Bartlett Elementary School and Bartlett Park. Staging streets are North & South Elroy, Tatge, North & South Eastern & the Commuter Parking Lot which is located on the corner of Oneida and Eastern Avenues.
The fireworks at 9:30 p.m. Sunday, July 4, are staged with the help of the village, which contributes $12,000 toward the cost of the display. The village also provides the support of the police and fire departments in keeping the festival orderly and safe.
The Bartlett Park District allows the festival on its soccer fields and takes charge of supervising the adjacent parking lot. They also take on the necessary but essential task of garbage removal.
The bands and entertainment and other events are funded by last year's celebration.
