City weathered bad storm on June 18

On the evening of Friday, June 18, 2010 the City of Des Plaines was the victim of a horrific storm that impacted numerous residents, downing 28 eight-foot utility poles leaving over 17,000 ComEd customers without power, damaging branches and trees, and closing roads.

The heart of the damage was on the City's south side, where some residents were forced to evacuate their homes.

As Mayor, I feel it is imperative to thank the residents for their cooperation and understanding during this emergency situation. These have been very trying days and your willingness to adapt and cope with this emergency have been sincerely appreciated by the City and ComEd.

I also wish to thank the ComEd administration and crews who have worked around the clock to restore operations as expeditiously as possible. Communication with their staff has been excellent and, while cleanup continues, it is obvious that they have been in control of the situation since its inception.

My special thanks to the Fire, Police, Public Works and Engineering departments, and volunteer members of the Emergency Management Agency, Fire Corps and Citizens on Patrol of the Homeland Security & Emergency Management Agency.

Together, this team worked to help protect the health and safety of our community. I am proud to work with them.

Know that the administration truly cares about your welfare. Des Plaines is a fine City. Each and every one of our residents is a valuable part of this community. My best to you always.

Martin J. Moylan

Mayor, Des Plaines
