Lake County briefs

Bike safety in Round Lake:The Round Lake Police Department is asking area youths to join them Saturday, June 26, at 9 a.m. at their first bicycle safety program at the Round Lake police station, 741 W. Townline Road. The Bicycle Rodeo will feature safety instruction for area youths, who officials say increase their biking on public streets in the summer months. The rodeo will also offer a group safety ride, obstacle course and free bike inspections.Out to lunch:MainStreet Libertyville's popular Out to Lunch program begins the season from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, June 25 at Cook Park downtown. Fourteen food vendors will serve a variety of offerings including ethnic foods, ribs, salads, burgers and brats and ice cream for dessert. The event is every Friday until Aug. 20 and features a local band. The Usuals debut on Friday, followed by Downhome Sophisticates (July 2); The Mojo Daddies (July 9); Wheels (July 16); Best Kitty Ever (July 23); Zach Pietrini and the Broken Bones (July 30); Kevin Spica (Aug. 6); Peter Cimbalo (Aug. 13) and Sagebrush on Aug. 20.Flood averted:Officials are easing flooding concerns predicted earlier this week for the Chain O' Lakes area. Updated figures in New Munster, Wis., show water levels will rise to about 18 inches over flood stage, and not 3 feet as anticipated Wednesday. This means water levels on the Chain and Fox River should not overflow into roadways and on lawns as originally thought. Water levels on the Chain and Fox River will continue to rise through the weekend, officials said, as water pours through the Fox River from Wisconsin. As a result, some no-wake restrictions could be put in place by the Fox Waterway Agency in the coming days for safety reasons, officials said. A no-wake restriction is in place for the lower Fox River, between the Bolger-Stratton Lock and Dam in McHenry and the Algonquin Dam in Algonquin. That restriction, which went into effect at 8 a.m. Wednesday, means boaters are not allowed to travel at speeds greater than 5 mph. Violations of no-wake or other boat restrictions during flooding are subject to a fine of $300 to $500.Take a canoe trip:You can take a guided canoe tour of the Des Plaines River through Lake County on July 3. Organized by the Lake County Forest Preserve District, the event will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at start at the Route 60 canoe launch near Vernon Hills. The event is open to adults and families with kids 12 or older. Participation will cost $25 for Lake County residents or $35 for anyone else. To register, visit lcfpd.org or call (847) 968-3321.
