Dist. 50 students had the chance to act as principal
Toward the end of the school year, the principals in Woodland District 50 got a bit shorter, and a bit younger.
That's because last month, a few select students became Principals for the Day at Elementary East, Elementary West and Woodland Middle School.
On May 17, seventh-grade student Samantha Nixon served as the school's Principal for the Day, working alongside her principal, Scott Snyder. In order to make things official, Samantha's day began with a visit to the Woodland Educational Support Center to receive her official staff ID card.
Samantha then returned to the school to deliver the morning announcements to the student body of nearly 2,400.
"I am very excited to be working for Miss Nixon on Monday," said Snyder. "I am confident that it will be a valuable learning experience for both of us."
Other activities for the day included attending the weekly administrative team meeting, conducting classroom observations, running the monthly meeting with the custodial staff and addressing any number of unscheduled needs that arise on a daily basis.
Ten days later, on May 27, Tyler Montgomery Revesz walked the halls of Elementary West with his principal, David Brown. He, too, got an official ID card before heading back to his school.
"Principal for a Day will be an opportunity for us both," said Brown. "I will be able to share with Mr. Revesz what the administrative team does daily for our Woodland learning community and Tyler will lend his unique perspective to the role of principal. I look forward to working with Mr. Revesz. I trust he will be a great addition to the West administrative team."
Activities for the day included visiting classrooms, reading to students, making announcements, conducting classroom observations and experiencing the behind-the-scenes workings of the 1,100-student school.
Earlier last month, Evan and Gabriel Detina became Principals for the Day at Elementary East.
The Principal for a Day event was made possible through the Woodland Educational Foundation's second benefit auction, Woodland Wishes, that was held April 17. Parents and community members had the opportunity to bid on the event in order to support the Educational Foundation. More than $14,000 was raised at Woodland Wishes this year.
Earlier this month, Evan and Gabriel Detina became Principals for the Day at Elementary East.
"The Foundation will maintain its commitment to the students and staff of Woodland District 50," said Foundation President Ken Detina. "Events such as Woodland Wishes are key opportunities for the parents, staff and community to come together for such a worthwhile cause. We thank everyone for their support that evening and look forward to further supporting the district for years to come."
