Midsommar celebrates Scandinavian love for sunshine

Bright summer days may not always be pleasant, given the scorching temperatures. But they are a luxury for Scandinavians, who have celebrated the arrival of summer solstice for centuries.

The festival, Midsommar, is "one of the major holidays in Scandinavia because most of the year it's so dark," said Jack Grandin, treasurer of Vasa Park in South Elgin, which is holding its fifth annual Midsommar celebration from 2 to 9 p.m. Saturday, June 19.

Saturday's event will feature the traditional Maypole dance, accompanied by Chicago Spelmanslag, a Scandinavian folk band known for fiddling.

Dark of the Moon Contra-Band from Madison, Wis., Nordkids Music Club and Sverige Barnum will also join the live performance.

"A great emphasis is on young people," said Grandin. "We encourage them to learn and know the Scandinavian culture."

This year, children will have the opportunity to parade in folk costume, spin in dance shows, marvel at Viking displays and ride the ponies they decorate.

For fans of Hans Christian Andersen's "The Ugly Duckling," a prize will be available to anyone who can find a swan Saturday, said Linda Steffensen from Scandinavian Park.

Families could also try hands at traditional cultural crafts before lighting up the night with their handmade luminarias. Midsommar's mainstay, a bonfire ceremony will follow.

Families are encouraged to bring a picnic basket and beverages. They can also try out Scandinavian food offered by local organizations.

"It's a great opportunity for old friends to meet again or make new friends at the magnificent Vasa Park," said Grandin.
