Barrington grad Duffy honored by University of Chicago

Former Barrington all-area softball standout Kathleen Duffy graduated Saturday from the University of Chicago with two majors - international studies and history.

She also earned a major award from the school's Women's Athletic Association.

Duffy was named the most valuable player for the softball team, an award presented to an athlete who makes a significant contribution to the team and best demonstrates skill, loyalty, and sportsmanship.

• The Sue Enquist camp, hosted by the Illinois Bash, will be held today and Wednesday at Community Athletic Fields in Elk Grove.

Enquist holds more national championships (11) than anyone in the history of softball. She is UCLA softball's first All-American, national champion and Hall of Famer.

In 2006, Enquist concluded her storied 27-year career as head coach of UCLA with a record of 887-175-1 (.835), making her the winningest active softball coach.

She is the only person in NCAA softball history to win a championship as a head coach and a player. Hailed a "coaching legend" by ESPN, Enquist's tenure produced 65 All-Americans and 12 Olympians.

She has been inducted into the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Hall of Fame and the UCLA Hall of Fame. Enquist is also the recipient of multiple national coach of the year and Pac-10 coach of the year honors.

She concluded her UCLA MVP playing career with a career batting average of .401.

Women's tennis

Wisconsin-Whitewater senior Ingrid Stensvaag (Palatine) earned a spot on the College Sports Information Directors of America academic All-America college division at-large second team sponsored by ESPN The Magazine.

Stensvaag, a health and human performance major, carries a 3.98 (out of 4.0) cumulative grade-point average.

She has been on the dean's list every semester, earned the UW-W Academic Achievement Award all four years, was an Intercollegiate Tennis Association scholar athlete and a member of the Golden Key and Sigma Lambda Alpha honor societies.

Stensvaag was named UW-W's female athlete of the year for the 2009-10 school year, and earned a UW-W Chancellor's scholar athlete award and the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference's Judy Kruckman Scholar Athlete Award for tennis.

Stensvaag went 21-11 at No. 2 singles and teamed with Annie Smith to go 19-9 at flight two doubles for the Warhawks this year.

She helped the team earn its third consecutive WIAC title and third straight berth in the NCAA III Tournament, where it advanced to the third round.

Stensvaag improved on the All-America honor she earned a year ago when she was a CoSIDA ESPN The Magazine third-team academic All-American.

Football

Carl Marella (Maine West) plans to attend Millikin University and play football for Big Blue coach Doug Neibuhr.

An honor-roll student, Marella plans to major in education at Millikin.

"We look forward to having Carl with us," said Neibuhr. "He is a good athlete who enjoyed a solid high school career. We are pleased that he will be attending Millikin University."

Marella played cornerback for Maine West. He broke his collarbone his junior year, preventing him from playing.

He was considered one of the top 10 leaders by his peers his senior year. He also had 24 tackles, 3 pass breakups and a blocked field goal.

Marella has been a six-semester honor-roll student, earning himself Warrior of the quarter in spring 2009.

Baseball

Wisconsin-Platteville pitcher Will Osmanski (Elk Grove) earned first-team honors in the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

The senior earned the victory when Platteville clinched a WICA playoff berth with a 10-5 win over Wisconsin-Superior.

The win also gave Osmanski a school-record 7 wins for the season. He was 7-3 with a 4.18 ERA and finished his career with 13 victories, second all-time at Platteville.

Awards winner

Charles "Chick" Graffy was honored as the 2010 Class 3A and 4A Friends of Athletics Award winner by the Illinois Athletic Directors Association.

Graffy has been instrumental in the Hoffman Estates High School athletic department for many years.

He has volunteered to coach football since 1994, baseball since 2000 and basketball from 1993-95. He coached football for 28 years in the Hanover Park youth football program, which feeds into Hoffman Estates.

Graffy also started a scholarship for the male and female athlete with the highest GPA at Hoffman. Each athlete receives a $300 scholarship from the Graffy family.
